Strategic Traffic Patrol

In January 2000, then Chief of Police, Angelo A. Toscano and the Wilton Police Commission adopted a new division within the Department. This division is named the "Strategic Traffic Patrol" (STP) and is comprised of four veteran officers of the Wilton Police Department.

STP was instituted to address traffic problems within the Town of Wilton. This unit operates independently of the Patrol Division. STP is responsible for addressing citizen complaints regarding high traffic volume and speeding violations. To accomplish this, the unit utilizes the newest technology in speed detection, education, and enforcement.

The STP unit utilizes the following equipment to achieve its goal in combating aggressive drivers within the Town of Wilton:

  • Marked Patrol Vehicles
  • Unmarked Patrol Vehicles
  • Radar Trailer
  • Trunk Mounted Speed Displays
  • Electronic Traffic/Speed counters
  • Vehicle mounted Radar
  • Laser

OTHER DUTIES OF STP

  • Maintain and repair all traffic signs (town roads only) in conjunction with the Wilton Department of Public Works
  • Assist private contractors in maintaining all center lines and road markings on town owned roads.
  • Attend Laidlaw Transits monthly Safety Meetings
  • Public education / Awareness
  • Child safety seat instillation / Inspections
  • Perform site surveys at locations of potential site line problems (i.e.: photographs, diagrams, etc.)
  • Maintain certification of all radar and laser units

FUTURE DUTIES OF STP

  • Commercial vehicle inspection / Enforcement
  • Investigation of ALL serious injury / Fatal traffic accidents

It is the ultimate goal of the STP Unit to significantly reduce speeding violations and aggressive driving habits making the roadways safer for the citizens we are sworn to serve.

Selective Enforcement Unit

At specific times during a shift, the shift supervisor will assign patrol units to motor vehicle enforcement duties. This assignment is performed with the use of radar and/or officer observations. The Selective Enforcement Unit (SEU) will target specific locations to enforce motor vehicle laws.

The areas of enforcement will be based on citizen's complaints, surveys performed by the Strategic Traffic Patrol and areas where multiple accidents are common.

The Selective Enforcement Unit is also deployed during holiday seasons through State or Federal grants. This enforcement is commonly targeting speeders and operators who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
